    Kandy to Unawantuna by Bus

    The bus is another mode of transport you can choose to travel from Kandy to Unawatuna. But there are no direct buses on this route, and hence, there will be a change in the mode of transport. First of all, you need to reach the Kandy Good Shed Bus Station.

    Every 10 minutes, you will get a bus to Kaduwela. Board this bus. It will take approximately 3 hours and 40 minutes to reach Kaduwela. Drop off at Kaduwela and hire a taxi that takes you to Kadawetha. This distance is 10 km.

    From Kadawatha Bus Station, take the next bus to Galle. These buses are available every 30 minutes and take 1 hour and 30 minutes to reach the destination. Come off the bus at Galle Bus Station and book another taxi for Unawatuna. The distance is around 4 km. The total cost of this journey will be approximately 800 LKR.

    Make sure to carry some food with you on this long trip. The bus may or may not stop for an interval. It is better to carry your food so you do not stay hungry for a longer time.

    Kandy to Unawantuna by Train 

    There are two trains that you can opt for. One of these is the fastest. We will discuss both of them here. We will start with the fastest train. Board the train (line 1024) from Kandy railway station till Fort Station, Colombo. This is a journey of 3 hours and 30 minutes.

    Wait for around half an hour and board the next train (8056 Galu Kumari) from Fort Station to Unawatuna Railway Station. This journey will last 2 hours, 15 minutes. So, the total journey will be approximately 6 hours and will cost between 100-500 LKR. This fast train leaves Kandy at 10.40 am. This is the only fast train in a day.

    The slow train takes 17 hours and 50 minutes to reach Unawatuna from Kandy. This train departs from Kandy at 4 pm. Board the train for Fort Station, Colombo. It will reach here at 7 pm. The next train available from Fort Station to Unawatuna is at 6.50 am next morning. So, you need to take a halt at Colombo.

    You can explore Colombo’s vibrant nightlife during your halt or book a taxi to Unawatuna. If you board the train for Unawatuna in the morning, you will be there by 10 am.
