Colombo to Sigiriya By Train
Most prefer checking the possibility of traveling by train considering the affordability and the convenience of transfers. So we thought of first guiding you here with the information of availability of trains and checking the possibility of arranging the transfers by train.
When considering the possibility of traveling by train there are might be few things that might disappoint you. first, you will not find any train departures that are connecting Colombo and Sigiriya. Also, the available departures are not frequent.
The train transfers are available from Colombo Fort Central railway station to Habarana train station. Hbarana is a destination that is located about 17 to 20 Km away from Sigiriya, and so as you have to check for alternative transfer methods to proceed to Sigiriya from Habarana.
The train departures from Colombo to Habarana are available on daily basis. But the departures are only available three times for the day. The scheduled train departures are as follows
The express train on route 6011 depart from Colombo Fort railway station at 06.05 HRS and arriving to Habarana at 11.16 HRS. The second option is the Intercity train on route 6075 that departs from Colombo at 15.05 HRS and it will arrive to Habarana at about 18.42 HRS. the third option is not so a recommended option as it available at night that is departing at 21.30 HRS and arrive to Habarana on the next day 3.00 HRS.
This is the Night Mail Sleeper Train. If you get into this train arranging the ground transfers back and forth will be a problem as the transfers would not find this time despite you arrange a private transfer.

Colombo to Sigiriya By Bus
You have a second option to make your trip by bus. This is the second alternative public transfer option you get to make your trip from Colombo to Habarana.
Similar to train transfer options you get traveling by bus also not find as a comfortable and a convenient travel option as it doesn’t offer you direct transfer options and also the available transfers are not frequent.
If you are looking for a comfortable way of traveling where you can reach the destination in a quick travel time, traveling by bus cannot surely recommended.
The travel time from Colombo to Sigiriya takes from 4 to 7 hours and the time duration will be affected by weather and traffic conditions. The bus departures are usually available the whole day, yet the frequency of departures is not so even. To get your bus, you have three options of buses to chose as follows.
First getting to a Colombo to Anuradhapura which is on No 15 bus route. The second option is No 48, Colombo, Kaduruwela (Polonnaruwa) while the third is No 49, Colombo, Trinco bus route.
As none of the above buses are not directly proceeding to Sigiriya, you have to get down from Dambulla and should get in to another bus, taxi or a tuk that is heading to Sigiriya. From Dambulla to Sigiriya it takes like 30 minutes. The cost for a bus travel will take from 400 LKR to 800 LKR depending on the bus you take and it will be about 3 to 4 in USD.
